Learning Story – Weledeh Catholic School – Reflecting on Our Time with Bushkids
Session 6, The Week of November 6, 2024
What Happened?
In the morning we asked educators and students: What has changed since coming to Bushkids?
“I’m not an outdoorsy person. Now I’m really comfortable with playing now.”
“It’s more fun outside than any electronic device I have ever been on.”
“There’s many more activities to do everywhere you go.”
“The things from the Land shouldn’t be taken for granted.”
“It’s a really different vibe and pace and it’s important to take this on.”
Educator: “There’s a better sense of community.”
Educator: “You are much kinder to each other. I see you playing with friends that you don’t usually play with. I had to let go of being so structured and less time focused.”
Educator (regarding inclusivity of a student): “It’s so much easier for them here. It’s so enjoyable for them.”
Educator: “I see so much inclusion.”
Educator: “Consent is happening.”
Youth leader: “I learned from you all actually!”
In the afternoon we asked everyone to share a gratitude:
“People ask us what WE want to do.”
“The hills.”
“Sinew.”
“The trees.”
“Snowballs.”
“The weather.”
“The walltents.”
“Bannock.”
“All of you.”
“Blessed to be here together.”
“Sharing this opportunity with you all and the change of seasons.”
“The teachers who work here and show us how to do it.”
“To be born at this time on earth.”
“Connections new and old.”
“Axes.”
“The food.”
“Sewing.”
“The water.”
“Auntie Edna.”
Why is it Important?
Having the parents share a meal with us was so meaningful. We will celebrate in this way with each mentorship that we do at the school. We will do a presentation for the YCS Board on Nov 20 to share our successes and look for future support for this way of learning in the public school system so that it is accessible to all. We also hope to find ways to support the Grade 7’s to continue learning from the Land at their own school. We will have a planning meeting with the class and discuss opportunities, locations and the resources needed!
