Learning Story – How can we be leaders?

The Week of March 11th, 2025
What Happened?
We asked: How can we be leaders? How are you a leader?
We heard:
“We stand up against bullies.”
“When we explain things to people who don’t understand.”
“When we teach people things we know.”
“When we listen.”
How can we be leaders today as we prepare for the feast?
“We can help cook the food”
“We can show them around the site.”
“We can be friendly and welcoming when new people arrive.”
“We can help clean up the site, so it is ready.”
We discussed how we could be leaders today in preparation for the feast. There was much excitement about the possibility of smoores!!!!
Why is it Important?
Building community takes time. In order to build a healthy community, we all need to identify our gifts and begin to see how we can help each other. By encouraging the Bushkids to take on leadership roles their confidence will grow, as will their communication and problem-solving skills, which are important for positive social interactions.
What Does This Mean For Next Time?
In April, we will have another Family Literacy Event where we will host the Family Connections program. Families with young children will join for 2 hours in the morning. The Bushkids will prepare activities and invitations to play for the visiting children. Some may help in the kitchen, with site maintenance such as chopping wood, with hosting or by playing with the children. The Bushkids will take on leadership roles, and once the event is over we will take time to debrief and discuss what worked and what we found challenging.
We will begin working on moosehide after the March Break so hopefully we can have one there to work on at this event.
