Learning Story – Ats’ǫ Ełeghǫnets’etǫ
The Week of Feb 13, 2024
What Happened?
Cultural advisor to Bushkids Brenda Dragon has always taught us that we need to talk about love, show love, give love as much as possible with the Bushkids. She says we don’t do that often enough for children and youth. We talked about the Dene Law “Love each other as much as possible.” asked the Bushkids in the morning to find ways to show love to each other, themselves and the Land.
Why is it Important?
We talked about all of the different kinds of love – especially love of our friends, family and the Bushkids community. “I have known him ever since I was born”; “Love is taking care of the Land”; “Love is taking care of yourself by eating and drinking lots of water.” We heard one Bushkid say “Well you can’t really love someone you don’t know.” We responded by saying “Maybe there are actions we can do by going out of our way and helping someone we don’t know that well – is that a way of showing love?”
What Does This Mean For Next Time?
It is such a good reminder to us as educators to use the word love more often and to notice when we see love for each other, the Land and ourselves at Bushkids. The more we talk about it and show our appreciation for it, maybe we will show love even more within our community.
